The 3 general causes of Neck and Back pain, do you know them?

The causes of neck and back pain can be separated in to 3 general categories. Approximately:
~90% is caused by joint, disc and muscle problems (“mechanical” problems)…
~10% is caused by nerve compression or irritation, and…
Less than 1% is caused by serious pathology problems (eg. fractures, infections, tumors etc)...

Finding out which category (or categories) you are suffering from is the first thing we do (and something we continually monitor), because it determines what treatment is best for you and what self care activities are appropriate for you…

Mechanical problems are the most common (~ 90%) and involve problems with the spinal joints (strains, misalignments), discs, abnormal spinal curves and increased muscle tension.  Mechanical spinal problems are usually caused by bad postures, repetitive strains and by traumatic injuries. These problems are usually best treated by Chiropractors...

Nerve compression pain is caused by the compression and or irritation of spinal nerves and is the cause of ~10% of pain. This is usually caused by the progressive worsening of mechanical problems, it is when usually a disc bulge or spinal degeneration (arthritis) occurs to the degree that it compresses or irritates the nerves in the spine.

The pain from nerve compression is usually gives a classic sharp, shooting type of pain traveling down the entire arm or leg and often produces an area of numbness and noticeable muscle weakness. These problems are generally more painful and take longer to correct than mechanical pain problems. Depending on what is causing the nerve compression these problems are treated by Chiropractors or Medical doctors…

Serious pathology problems are, fortunately quite rare, causing less than 1% of neck and back pain. These problems are indicated by symptoms like pain that is unrelieved by rest, gets progressively worse, prior history of cancer, unresponsive to conservative care, history of significant trauma, generally unwell, recent unexplained weight loss, fever, recent infections, puncture wounds and IV drug use. These problems are usually confirmed by X-rays, MRI scans, etc and are treated by Medical doctors…
